Melks restored abbey, beaming proudly over the Danube Valley, is one of Europes
greatest sights. It was established as a fortified Benedictine Abbey in the 11th century. Freshly painted and gilded throughout, its a Baroque dream. A grand restoration project was completed by 1996 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the first reference to Austria.
