I created a "dictionary story" from sentences from a vintage Japanese-English dictionary I found in the free bin of a local thrift shop. It follows the rules of Jez Burrows - essentially he allows himself to make minor edits to no more than 5% of the sample sentences from which he constructs his stories.

Story (I'm from Hawaii, so it's influenced by current events):
I know every inch of the neighborhood. It was formerly an active volcano. The recent frequency of earthquakes makes us nervous. The sky is overspread with dark clouds. Volumes of smoke were seen rising from the top. The violent wind prevented checking the spread of the flames. The fire spread in all directions. It began thundering. I am sure I smell gas. The country was disturbed like a seething cauldron. Make haste! Be quick! We fled helter-skelter. We had a narrow escape. We got off without even a scratch. The mountain can be seen in the dim distance.
I have looked for him everywhere. His whereabouts are still unknown. He may have been mislaid somewhere in the confusion. Mere child that I was, I felt sad and shed tears. My heart almost burst with grief. All the treasure in the world cannot make me happy.
Suddenly the wind dropped towards noon. She insists on going home. It is little short of madness to do such a thing. Nothing can hinder her once she takes a thing into her head. Fear is often greater than the danger. I will go through fire and water for his sake. The sound of her footsteps died away. Only God knows where she has gone. Her heart is intent on accomplishing her purpose. She is equal to anything. Dusk is fast gathering. I have gone too far to retreat. She returned home as if nothing had happened. The scene is beyond the power of the pen to describe. The trees are all stripped of their leaves and everything looks desolate. The wind having shifted, my house was saved from the fire. My earnest prayer has been heard. This is a lucky find. Having carried out her mission, she safely returned. The lost article was restored to its owner.
My voice was choked with emotion. Where have you been all this while? I was so filled with joy that I could not speak for some time.
Few things in the world turn out as calculated. A severe earthquake was felt here last night. The flames scorched the sky. Fanned by the strong winds, the flames spread in all directions. It is beyond the power of any mortal. The recent fire has devastated the whole village. It blew up with a terrific explosion. It would be the end of the house. I will never go there again. My heart was too full for words. The path of human life is thorny. Do not quarrel with Providence. We are here, out of danger. I will make shift with what I have.
