Journaling :
I had already been 3 times to London while scholar trips. But this Summer 1990, it was the first time that I went there on my very own with one of my friends. We had booked 2 weeks in a pension. After a short trip by plane and underground, we had a one mile walk to the pension.
When we arrived, we met with the old lady that ran the pension: she was an Italian living in London for ages so we already knew that we would have some eatable food for our breakfasts and dinners!
We were not far from the center of London and could manage a lot of visits: the British Museum, the Tate Gallery, Madame Tussaud, the Tower of London...
And since we were now 21 years old, we were allowed to go to the pubs and enjoyed some beers! My favorite one was the Carlsberg Lager, specially when I was drinking them in an small Irish pub where there was a great ambiance with people singing and dancing.
At the end of our stay there, we suddenly realized that there was something wrong going in the world without us noticing: on August 2, the Iraq invaded Kuweit. There were a lot of big headlines and posters in the streets and suddenly a feeling as if there was going to be a 3rd World War. I was quite shocked when we saw a demonstration of Iraqi people holding the portrait of Saddam Hussein and saying they loved him... I had to call my parents in France to hear what they had to say about it, I realized that the feelings there were totally different and not so alarmist.
3 things I learned then:
- dont take a big luggage unless you can carry it!
- always have good shoes for visiting museums,
- foreigners dont have the same opinion on events.
What a great page! I love the black and white photos! And the journaling on the side is a perfect compliment!
