Katakolo is a tiny fishing village-turned-cruise port. The main street begins at the dock and leads to several blocks of tacky souvenir shops and waterfront cafes that exist primarily for cruisers. Walking down the main street of Katakolo, the mati, or “eye,” the distinctive talisman with concentric blue and white circles are displayed everywhere. The all-seeing eyeball is supposed to help ward of the “evil eye”. Renata Beach is just a few steps from the dock. The water is crystal clear, but the beach is pebbles. You have to walk across several yards of dried spongy seaweed to get to the water.
