Dorothy Comingore (1913-1971)Born in LA,she was discovered by Charles Chaplin. She went on to play bit parts in Hollywood movies until Welles cast her as Susan,the fragile but fiery mistress of press tycoon Charles Foster Kane.Her performance is generally considered one of the best in the movie (1941).Hollywood blacklisting ended her career in 1951.Appearing as a witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee (about her alleged Communist connections),she declined on constitutional grounds to answer questions on political party affiliation(October 1952). She struggled with alcoholism during her later life, and died from a pulmonary disease,at the age of 58.
