Itasca

Itasca State Park contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
The explorer Henry Schoolcraft arrived at Lake Itasca in 1832 and created the name from Latin words for truth and head. In the 19th century, Jacob Brower saw this region being transformed by logging and was determined to protect the red pine (the state tree) forests for future generations. His efforts led the state legislature to establish Itasca as a state park. It is Minnesota's first state park and the second oldest in the nation behind Niagara Falls.
