Journaling: Last summer, as we took Melaina home after her stay in Renton, the Interstate 80portion of the drive across Nevada into Utah seemed interminable, even boring. Was it because we were so anxious to get to our destination? Was it the time of year? Had haze from fires dulled the views? Whatever it was, Dave and I thought we never wanted to travel that highway again.

But this year we wanted to drive the Volcanic Legacy Byway from California through Oregon, and the best way to get there was west-bound on I-80. Although we dreaded it, right from the start it was a wonderful experience. We had beautiful views of the Great Salt Lake. The Bonneville Salt Flats, although damp, were dry enough to walk on. Every mile brought incredible vistas. Wed even do it again!
