In the environment of the Xth century, countess Mumadona Dias, asked that a monastery is built. With the constant attacks of the Moors, she decided to build a fortress to protect the monks and the Christian community which lived around her.
So is born primitive castle of Guimares. In the XIIth century, count Dom Henrique and Dona Teresa come to live in the castle of Guimares and it is probably there that Dom Afonso Henriques was born.
When his defensive function disappeared, the castle enters a progressive degradation and remains neglected until the XXth century. It is at this date that the castle is declared national monument and the works of restoration are made
