I recently listened to a series of interviews titled "The Life of the Soul," from To The Best Of Our Knowledge. One of the interviews was with Gregg Krech who practices Naikan-consciousness, a Japanese tradition of being grateful for everything that positively impacts life. So, today I will choose 5 things in my life to be grateful for:
1.) The Microwave! I love this thing because it makes it sooooo easy to do cooking for just one or two (depending on whether it is lunch for me or dinner for me and hubby)
2.) The kitchen faucet. It may not be a pretty one, it may not be properly set in place (I noticed it wiggle today), and it may not have a hand sprayer -- but at least it is indoor plumbing and I don't need to lug buckets of water from outside or from some other part of the house to do what ever needs to be done.
3.) Similarly, I am not 100% thrilled with the washing machine I picked out, but it is a wonder. I remember my great aunt who would actually buy a wringer washer when the old one wore out -- this was in the 1970s and she could still get one through the Sears & Roebuck catalog! My washer is completely automatic. (Well, it doesn't sort, load, unload or put away the laundry but ...)
4.) And while I love the smell of clothes and linens dried on the line outside, I am exceptionally thankful for the clothes dryer! Don't have to worry about bird doo on the clean wash, don't have to lug a heavy basket outside to hang up everything, then go get it all again and lug in back in, and have to keep track of the clothes pins that always seem to grow legs and wander off somehow between wash days ...
5.) And, finally, I choose to be grateful for flatware! I know, it is rather mundane and boring and something we take for granted. But it sure is nice to use a knife, fork and spoon when eating my lunch-for-one while working at the computer ...
