Journaling reads:
Viewed from the road, The Everglades appear to be grassland with an occasional stream. This September 1986 shows it at a not particularly beautiful time of year in the Glades. I was not all impressed and prepared myself for a boring side trip. I was with my friend from New Zealand, though, and this was a place he dearly wished to see. So in we went.
Closer in, on the air boat, it quickly became apparent this was no ordinary grassland. It is, rather, a river grassland, an area both river and fresh water saw grass marsh. The river is 100 miles long and 50 miles wide, navigable in places by air boat, completely open river in others, unattainable marsh in others. It is completely compelling, often captivating, dangerous and mysterious. It was an ideal sanctuary for the Seminoles as they evaded US authorities in their effort to remain sovereign Nation.
