Naomi Johnson began her stage life as an actress aged 13 in 1920 in the comedy, The Charm School. She then played Ann in Just Because, a short-lived musical of 1922 written entirely by women.A trooper and enthusiast, Johnson quickly joined other struggling young performers in The Equity Players, a troupe that performed burlesques of current stage productions. One of Ziegfelds scouts noticed the vivaciousness and beauty of the young brunette, and she became a chorine in the 1924 Follies. She appeared in Ziegfelds The Three Musketeers and Rio Rita. Her final performances occurred in 1930s edition of the Artists and Models revue. A free spirit, Johnson enjoyed modeling, and her 1924 sessions with Alfred Cheney Johnston, both nude and clothed, are among the most famous of his studies of the Ziegfeld girls. Her later sessions, as a married woman, sporting short hair, are more demur.
