Their waters are crystal clear, allowing you to easily see the fish and aquatic life within.
Protected ecosystems
A cenote (pronounced seh-no-tay) is a naturally occurring sinkhole caused by the collapse of the surrounding limestone. When this phenomenon happens, it exposes groundwater, creating a natural pool. Cenotes are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with clear salt-free water. The water in cenotes is very cold. Opposite from the warm ocean water you get to enjoy in the Riviera Maya. When you jump in youll immediately be refreshed.
There are three types of cenotes; open air cenotes, completely covered cenotes (caves), and the last cenote is a mixture of the two. The third type of cenote is the best because you get to get the best of both worlds, youll be able to enjoy the open air and if you so desire to explore the cenote caves.

Journaling:
At Grand Cenote they were working on the decking that would have given access to the shallow waters. The deep end of the pool was dark and the water was cold. We saw one fish. We spent most of our time instead watching the turtles.
Beautiful flow of blues, so like the water of the Caribbean! My nephew went scuba diving through the cenotes. He said he was amazing, but too easy to get lost!

I like the little photo of the turtles. You picked a beautiful place to go snorkeling.

wow I am not sure you would get me in a cave under water - photos are cool! thanks for the info on cenotes - love all the blues!
