Egg Drop Day

At Heritage Elementary, every students favorite event was Egg Drop Day. Kids talked about it from 2nd grade on - in fifth grade science class, the following assignment was given: create something that will hold a raw egg, protect the egg and prevent it from breaking when thrown off the roof of the gym. On the day of the experiment, the entire fifth grade trooped outside and watched as Mr. Fugate, Mr. Saborin and Mr. Bea took each creation and tossed, threw or catapulted them off the roof of the school.
Stephen was so excited for the day. He had come up with his idea right away and nothing could persuade him to change any aspect. He took me shopping, he picked out his supplies and together we built his creation. The egg was nestled in the middle of three large bouncy balls. On Egg Drop Day, I showed up with all the other parents to watch and take pictures. Honestly, I swear the three boys on the roof had as much fun as the kids. Cheers, groans and laughter were abundant as the most amazing creations came soaring (or sinking) down. Stephens idea received a lot of attention from the onlookers. And it would have worked, except that we used packing peanuts to surround the egg instead of cotton. I thought he would be so upset when he saw his broken egg; but he surprised me. Stephen just made a face (see below left) and said, Well, now we know that wont work. A born scientist.
