Hopefully it is difficult to tell that the background is composed of two different photos, although they were taken from the same trail, one looking out to the view of the valley, the other looking along the trail, with the bright red toyon berries in the foreground.

Did you know that the city of Hollywood was named for the Toyon bush? It is also known by the common names Christmas berry and California Holly from the bright red berries it produces. Toyon is a beautiful perennial shrub native throughout the western part of California and the Sierra foothills. It is a prominent component of the coastal sage scrub plant community, and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats. I love being able to recognize Toyon in the wild, and am proud of having planted it in our native garden. Our berries are more orange than red, but the birds still like them.
