The city of Betancuria, white and neat, appears before our eyes nestled in a valley in the mountains. It was founded in 1404 by the Norman conqueror Jean de Bethencourt which she received the name.
Throughout its existence, Betancuria has been razed several times by European privateers, in particular by English and Dutch, and by Maghreb pirates.
Until 1834, this city was the capital of the island and until 1836, the capital of the territorial lordships installed since 1667 in Fuerteventura.
Betancuria, which currently lives almost exclusively from tourism, was declared in 1978, Ensemble historico-artistique.
