Journaling:
We were up at 3:30am and at Tomichi Pass before sunrise. I took a short but very steep hike to look over the shelf road, and my O2 dropped to 80. We had to descend right away. You left your phone on the mountain, and at the end of the day we got it back at the Pitkin General Store.

You mention a shelf road and I'm thinking about the camber and gravel and a vehicle coming the other way since you mention the phone was recovered. I envy your poise.

A shelf road is a road carved way up on a cliff face, with a straight dropoff of a thousand feet (more or less) and no wider than the tires of a jeep. There is no room for error and you just don't look down. http://alpineparadise.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Shelf-Road.jpg
