Journaling: As I was perusing the Internet looking for a photograph for this challenge, I came across this photo of Twyla Tharp. For some reason, I was drawn to it and downloaded it. I kept coming back to it again and again.
There is something amazing about this woman. I mean, anyone who can lift her leg above her head at 75 is amazing. She reminds me of a voice teacher I had back in Chicago. At 76, she could still sing coloratura with ease. She taught me to work hard, take care of your voice, dont push and you will sing forever.
Twyla Tharp teaches the same thing. Creativity is a discipline, art a skill. She famously said, In order to think outside the box, you first have to start with a box.
I have gotten frustrated on my journey into the visual arts, but this photo of Twyla Tharp is a great reminder to me to keep on working at it. Yes, I will make mistakes, yes I will throw up my hands, but in the end, I will succeed in making art. And that is what its all about.
