Text: Im especially fond of these family photos because theyre not the traditional vintage studio portraits. My paternal Grandfather took these shots on a family trip to Mount Rushmore National Memorial in 1936. I was able to approximately date them by referencing the carving timeline of the monument. The rough carving of Lincoln was done in 1936 and completed in September 1937. Roosevelt wasnt completed until 1939.
My Dad is the lanky 13 year old standing between his Mother (my Grandmother) to the right and relatives to the left. I absolutely love the photo of the family car that carried these travelers 700 plus miles from Kansas City, Missouri, to South Dakotas Black Hills.

A few interesting facts about the construction of Mount Rushmore:

-It took 14 years and 400 men to carve the mountain. Despite harsh and dangerous conditions, no one died during the project.

-Mount Rushmore cost nearly one million dollars and was mostly carved during the Great Depression.

-Over 90% of Mount Rushmore was carved using dynamite. The blasts removed approximately 450,000 tons of rock. Details were finished with jackhammers and hand chisels.

-Thomas Jefferson's face on Mount Rushmore was originally started on the opposite side of George Washington, but 18 months into the carving, they realized the granite was too weak. His face was dynamited off and carved on the other side.

-The faces of Mount Rushmore are 60 feet high. Thats the same size as a six-story building.

Marnie, this is so incredibly special, and I agree, the inclusion of the family car makes it all the more awesome. Perfect, perfect, perfect layout for these priceless photos because it continues on with the feeling/colors of the photos. Really awesome work here. I watched a program about the creation of Mt. Rushmore on PBS, and what a struggle it was. It's amazing it was completed at all.

Wow just wow. This is incredible. I chose this for today's Fans of Anna FB page.
