Minnesota is the largest producer of iron ore and taconite in the U.S. Nearly all of the high grade ore in Minnestoa has been mined but advances in technology have found a use for the lower grade ore called taconite. Underground mines were developed to remove the valuable ore of most ranges but some operations took place in enormous pit mines where steamshovels and other industrial machines remove massive amounts of ore. The "Iron Range" refers to the numerous iron producing ranges embraced within the Lake Superior region. This includes these four major iron depositis: Mesabi Range, Vermillion Range, Gunflint Range and Cuyuan Range.
