Giethoorn is a lakeside village, often nicknamed " Venice of the North " following the example of Amsterdam, of Stockholm or still of Bruges. He(it) raises itself(draws up itself) in the heart of a natural reserve - vast region of swampy peat bogs - called "De Wieden". Giethoorn is traveled(browsed) by long channels(canals) dug(accentuated) during the last centuries for the extraction of the peat, the activity at the origin of the creation of numerous lakes in the East and in the South of the village. The village extends on horseback(by horse) over the channel(canal) Dorpsgracht, long of about 7 kilometers. His(her,its) geographical situation makes him(it) inaccessible by car: it is a pedestrian city. We can visit Giethoorn on foot, by(on a) bicycle or by boat. Farms, thatched cottages and other houses - connected(bound) between them by small bridges(decks) - are particularly considered as their roofs spray-painted in thatch
