Also called the butcherbird, it impales its prey on barbed wire. "Loggerhead" refers to the relatively large size of the head as compared to the rest of the body.

Journaling:
Ahead of our trip, I read about what birds to look for in the grasslands. The loggerhead shrike was at the top of my list. The descriptions were intriguing and I think I was attracted to the name.

Love the barbed wire fence post traversing across the two pages! Sounds like a pretty brutal bird, but a beautiful one! Beautiful artwork!

Gorgeous - love reading about your trips! We have a Butcherbird in Australia - not like this one at all. It has a beautiful song. I wonder if it kills it's pray in a horrible way too coz of it's name?!! Interesting! That song aint so pretty anymore LOL!

Soft colors, small bird--such a contrast with the rugged barbed wire. Could not believe he is so ruthless. Nature never ceases to amaze.
