This is a photo that my daughter snapped of me and her friend Christina, looking at a mural in the Mission District in San Francisco. The words on the mural are What we do to the mountain we do to ourselves.
I used the photo to fill my canvas widthwise, extracting the image from its background, which was a white wall, and making a new background from artsy paper #2 and most of the transfers and overlays in the Hearth artplay palette. To get additional texture, I placed solid paper #2 at the top of the layer stack on multiply blending mode, and reduced the opacity to 40%. I then used a layer mask to selectively erase the texture in certain areas.
I used the frame from the Hearth artplay palette, pulling it in behind the photo, and added the word art and journaling. Then I added my own touches of grafitti, using the overlays and transfers in the Hearth artplay palette as well as circle and spatter brushes in the blues and yellows of the actual graffiti under the mural on the sidewalk.
As a final touch, because many of the murals that we saw that day were nestled into trees and shrubs, I added a hopeful stitched leaf and a little yellow brad.
