story:
Most of the strollers and dog-walkers were moving on, clouds and chill were beginning to gather, it was time to head back. I glanced around for one last look, and set my sights on the target, back up the hill, nearly 4 miles away, with the challenge of finding a quiet route in the late afternoon in the middle of the city. I headed into the Marina for a respite by the Palace of Fine Arts, but there was still a long way to go. I zig-zagged a lot, always trying to find streets without gardeners, delivery trucks, teenage boys with skateboards, and other sources of sudden loud noises. I was only partially successful, but at last the middle of the city was behind us. Now we just needed to climb the hill, slowly. That crisp morning air that warranted the puffer vest, the fleece and the long sleeved-shirt was a thing of the past. Layer by layer was stripped and stuffed into the backpack. Cher was thirsty but didnt want to drink, and would only rest for a few minutes here and there, always on the alert for something that might scare her. At last, about 4 hours after starting out, we got back to Nob Hill, 8 miles of trekking under our belts, a wonderful and satisfying adventure accomplished, and now it was time for a long, long nap.
