Thanks for the beautiful inspiration, Joanie and Tansy!
My mother had 5 sisters and Kath was the eldest. Born in 1916 to a very young mother at a time when the world was going to war she made a wonderful life for herself. Left home at 16 to find work and educated herself. Taught herself to play the piano and how to drive a car. Almost until the day she died in her nineties she would walk down the hill to the local hospital where she did volunteer work every week. Created the most beautiful garden and knew the botanical names of every plant she grew. Her home was full of treasured and beautiful things including her piano and she'd show and let us hold anything we liked. I felt a common bond as we both had the same crooked front tooth. I've driven past where she lived with my uncle hoping to see the magnolia that grew at the side of the house but it's all gone now. She would have planted another magnolia upstairs by now though. You can be sure!
