This is a layout I made for Joanne Brisebois Designer Spotlight Challenge at Oscraps.

Text reads:

People would always ask me, So, what was it like? Where do I begin? I could tell them about the incredible array of bugs, insects and lizards I have encountered. I could talk about teaching in sweltering heat to the tune of pigs, goats and cows. I could tell tales of sleeping under starry night skies, listening to hippo's or the beat of the African drum. Or of sitting by the roadside for hours just waiting for a hike and waving down semi-trailers, sitting hunched in the cabin for two hours or more. I could relate numereous teaching experiences of all 300 students that I taught, where english is their fourth or fifth language and classes start at 6am. I could tell tales of living beside a beautiful scenic river but ever so cautious of crocodiles munching my toes, stepping on a deadly black mamba snake or Angolan bullets whizzing past my head. I could recount tribalistic attitudes that still prevail, witchcraft and traditional healing, as they realte tales of dreams of hyenas and the rain coming. Rain! The excitement of seeing a cloud in the sky and praying for more than just another incredible display of thunder and lightning. Of learning that human beings always want what they haven't got - to be fat or thin! Black or white! Straight or curly hair! Of students who are 18-30 years who spend their holidays harvesting and pounding mahongo, taking fish from the river and hunting with bows and arrows. For all of this, what was it really like? To leave the comfort and security of your family and home, all that you know, venturing off into the great unknown.I can say without a doubt that it has been the most incredible experience of my life. The lessons have been mine and they have been numerous and insightful. To live for each moment, to accept people as they are and to be thankful every day for the many things that have been bestowed on us in this life.We look in many directions as we are on a constant search for peace and happiness. But life is about giving and loving without expectation or conditions. That is your purpose. That is what gives meaning to life. Namibia, Africa 1995

Helen! I so love that you shared this with us! I sit here reading this journaling and I am totally in awe! I love the photo at the bottom and I think that the title is perfect! But even if you had typed this journaling on a white sheet of paper with an old manual typewriter, I would have hung on to every word and thought it the most splendid layout! Thanks so much for sharing!!!
