journaling:
Our last morning in Tahoe . . . we took a walk along the newly exposed beach on the south shore. Instead of the usual crisp blue morning skies, there was gray haze. For the last few days, lines of smoke has been entering the Tahoe Basin from the south, seemingly traveling Highway 89 into the basin. The smoke was from the Butte fire burning in Jackson. We though of Steves house in Angels Camp, and Gails beautiful new cabin in the woods in Arnold, and prayed for their safety. Later as we drove south out of the Tahoe basin, the smoke thickened. When we arrived in Pollock Pines, it was tangible in the air, and ash particles rained on us. The smoke would follow us all the way to San Francisco and for days afterwards, there would be ash in the air.
The peaceful rowboat and the hot air balloon in the distance belied the tragedy of the scene. This is summer in California during one of the worst drought years I remember. We need rain, and lots of it.
