Under Construction (2pglo)

Every now and then you get to do a page about a truly life changing moment. This page is one of them.
Three years ago as my mom was in the late stages of colon cancer, I made the decision to move Nigel and I to my parents house - (1) To help my dad in dealing with the physical and emotional demands that accompany dealing with this horrible desease and (2) so that I could spend more time with my mom in her final months and Nigel could get to know his mommom better. As with any decision, this one also had it's pros and cons. On the positive side, we got to spend more time with my mom. On the negative side, she was in the worst condition healthwise that a person could be in. Oftentimes Nigel had to se her in pain. On the positive side, our new home was in a much better neighborhood with a much better school district. On the negative side, he had to leave everything he'd known since birth. The one thing that really saddened me was that in his new house he didn't really have a space of his own. There were two extra rooms, but one was filled from floor to ceiling with junk. Although my dad has never been officially diagonosed as a Hoarder, he is definately what one would call a "Hoarder in Training". lol. Five or six months after we moved in my mom passed. Shortly after that my dad went to Florida for a year to find a happier place (both inside and out). When he left, he told me he was sorry he couldn't help, but to do whatever I needed to do to make Nigel and I happy and comfortable. I put together this room to sorta compensate for everything Nigel had to go through. I wanted it to be perfect. Nothing's perfect, but I'd like to think a came close!
Life is like this sliding scale between structure and chaos and we're always struggling to maintain balance between the two. A construction site is the perfect embodiment of that. I like to call it "ordered mahem". Anyone who's ever had an extensive home improvement project done knows what I'm talking about. You get to a point where you're like "I just want my life and my home back"!! Then magically in a week or so it all seems to come together. In this layout I was trying to capture that correlation between life, construction and scrapbooking.
I used Anna's: Artsy Layered Template #53
Wow, what a wonderful story behind your layout. Love how the room turned out and that you did almost all together. That is so special!! Sorry that you had to lose your momma to such a horrible disease. I hope your dad will find his happy place. Thanks for sharing!

Ah Steve I am so sorry about your Mum. What a wonderful thing you and Nigel did together. If you both ever fancy free accommodation in Australia whilst renovating your rooms, just say LOL!!! I too am a renovator and yeah, it's a lot of dust and hard work but what a reward at then end! I always plan the next reno straight after!! What a wonderful page to commemorate it all. I hope your Dad finds his happy place. xx

Yes, remodeling is always a bit of a mess, but Nigel must be delighted with his own space. My sincere sympathy over the loss of your mother!! One day he'll see this wonderful page and remember the good!

congrats on the remodeling and doing so much of it yourselves! love all the photos - very sorry for the loss of your mother.

What an awesome 2-page spread...not only the wonderful photos, but more importantly, the backstory, and the blessing of family. And believe me, you are blessed to have loved your mom so much. Nigel has a wonderful dad, and he will look back on this experience for the rest of his life. Oh the stories that will be told......

I think the story express beautifully how you try to help everyone, your heart speaks loud about your inner beauty, these momentsare for you forever, you have seen the path clearly to do a compassionate and fantastic job!. Ann
