Process...
this page started with an old, beat-up rainbow umbrella. i was going to recycle it but stopped and decided to, first, take some photos with it to see what i could do with the color and light.
this particular photo was taken while i was standing under the umbrella, and shooting up. i have a lot of different shots to play with but i started with this one because it was full frame.
next, i decided that i wanted a design that focused on the lines as much as the color. i created four rectangular photo masks and clipped the photo to each mask. you can see how the images were rotated and then realigned.
a lot of times i get to this point and a photo will go in my never to be finished file, but this time i decided to look for a strong image to pair with the photo.
my son was playing his guitar in the background so i went with music theme. i found a photo of jimi hendrix, sketched an outline and scanned it. it was very rough but i was going to block it and turn it into a silhouette so it was good enough. you can find similar images on the internet but if you are not sure an image is in the public domain, it's better to do something that is your "own."
back on track ... the image is placed over the umbrellas and realigned so that the lines work with the lines in his face. i think you can also see the red visual triangle that forms from the three circles that are at the top of the umbrellas. even though i used four photos, in the end, you really only see three. i added some splatter to break of up the space, a title, and it was done.
