I have used on the focal image watercolor techniques you can see details in Anna;'s blog Composite series Part 1 of 6.
I have added various transfers from the APP Simplicity that is one of my favorites and I tend to use often.
The transfers were adjusted with Hue and saturation to a different muted color to match the colors of the overall composition.
