Spatter Selfie Process

My piece https://ozone.oscraps.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=312157&title=splatter-selfieanna-lift&cat=all was inspired by the brilliant work of Florian Nicolle http://www.behance.net/neo_innov
I wasn't going to come close to his amazing mixed-media and digital work, but I was happy with my process for separating my image into shadows and midtones and clipping Joanne Brisebois's newsprint paper to the midtones layer. M. Nicolle says that good sketches with real pen and inks are the foundations for his work. I was also able to find a decent tutorial for making your own Wacom inking brush http://jimstigall.blogspot.com/2012/02/photoshop-ink-brush-tutorial.html You need to play with the settings depending on your "hand" (I added texture that wasn't mentioned in the tutorial), but the most important settings are to use a broken square/rectangular brush with softened edges (like the chalk brush), to set the shape dynamics>size/jitter control to "pen pressure," and to reduce the brush flow
EDIT: if original image isn't contrasty enough, do something to increase contrast between shadows and highlights or pick a channel w/ strong contrast
