Two lighthouses exist on the southern tip of Point Loma. Their names are simply the New Point Loma Lighthouse and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Construction began for the New Point Loma Lighthouse in 1890. The Lighthouse is a 70 foot tall pyramidal tower, more for function than aesthetics, and it is the only one of its kind on the west coast. The Fresnel lens, with its ruby and clear lens, was manufactured in France, and originally entered in the Paris Exhibition of 1889. Upon winning a gold medal, permission was granted for it to be exhibited in the Chicagos Colombian Exposition of 1893, causing a second lens to be made for Point Loma. When it arrived, however, it did not fit, and another had to be ordered, causing a delay in completion. When the new light arrived in 1891, it had the name Anclote Key Lighthouse (Florida) inscribed on its identification plate, but was installed anyway. The lighthouse became operational in March 1891. After the original lens won another prize in Chicago, the original Point Loma Lens was shipped and installed in the lighthouse. Another interesting fact was that during WWII, all lighthouses were to be kept dark, and even the homes that the keeper and his family lived in had to have their windows covered with back paper if they wanted to turn on a light at night. In addition, all the buildings and even the sidewalks were painted olive drab. In 1973, the light was automated, so without the need of a caretaker, it became a Coast Guard Base. In 1997, rust and warping caused the original Fresnel Lens to no longer be used, and a new beacon was installed. In 2013, they began using an LED light array. I LOVE finding out the history of things.

The Process: I began with an Artsy Paper from the new AP Beach. I added the photo, masking out everything, but then painting back in the area of the photo I wanted. I placed this on blend mode Vivid Light. I duplicated this layer, and then played around with adding and removing more of the image to get the desired look. I added a variety of transfer behind the photo, playing around with changing their color and blend mode until satisfied. I added the edge overlay, changing its color. I added the SkinnyLined Overlay, and word art. I then added the elements to the lower right of the page, placing the white lace transfer under the elements. I added the long white frame, masking out the center portions of the frame. I finished up by adding the title, and the 4 pelican, extracted from another photo, and blended into the page using blend mode hard light.
