Two ships from the Festival of Sail from Labor Day weekend 2013. The bridge in the background is the Coronado Bay Bridge, which allows a northern entry to Coronado, the home of the Hotel Del Coronado. I am thinking the ship in the background is the Tole Mour out of Long Beach, California, and the Irving Johnson, out of Los Angeles, California.

The Process: I began with a gorgeous background paper from ArtPlay Palette Sea Life. It had a nice white area through the center, perfect for the photo. I placed the photo, and after applying a mask, painted in just the parts I wanted. Once painted in, I applied Blend Mode Linear Light. I then copied the photo, and to the photo higher in the layer stack, I put it back on Normal mode, but brought opacity down to about 50%. I took another copy of the photo, and used the filter Find Edges. This photo was placed on top of the other two, and then placed it on Blend Mode Darken. I painted out some areas, but left other areas darker to allow the black edges to be a bit bolder in some places. I added the Big Word, and then the Compass Overlay, applying a vector mask; I painted portions of this overlay away. I added the various word strips, buttons, and other elements on the lower left edge. I then added the word art and the Warm Glow. The final thing added was the Edge Overlay, which I changed to a medium blue and placed on Blend Mode Linear Burn.
