journaling: i waited almost 6 years to do something with this photo but i always knew that it was a significant capture. something about him riding away from me with that sign in front of him. that arrow is about life, right? or maybe its just me. to me it says keep going, try to stick to the right path, yourre growing up, before you know it you will be learning, living, and loving on your own. no parents required. i know, youre thinking thats a lot of stuff to imbue that arrow with, but its there. then theres that symbol for stop. most of us have been there. you know the feeling. you just want to shout STOP! stop growing up so fast. stop saying you can do it yourself. stop telling me you are too old to be seen holding my hand in public. i could go on, but you get the idea. whether we want it or not, it happens. they grow up. they keep moving forward, no matter how much we want them to stop. so we go along for the ride. its not always easy but theres no other ride like it. we hope we do a go a good job preparing them for life, giving them the skills they need to succeed and be happy. maybe sometimes we tell them that what we really want is for things to stay the same but mostly we encourage them onward. this is the one photo, among thousands, that really captures how i feel as a parent. he turned thirteen this past weekend and again i thought STOP and again no one listened. i guess all i can do is enjoy the ride and
hope he does too.
