I am thrilled to report that my son's boat took second place in the premier men's event at the Virginia State Championships this past Saturday. Two years ago, their team wasn't even able to field a boat in this category. Last year, they placed 5th in the event. How far this team has come in just two short years! So very proud of them all

Process

I actually started with the black circle and text - inspired by some graphic design work with this font. Next, I converted the photo to black & white and then applied a layer mask to mask out all the distracting background. I created two copies with blending modes Lighten over Linear Light. I added a Levels adjustment layer and intensified the darks without losing too much detail. The various circles in APP Achieve ArtsyPaper4 made a great complementary background and I made two copies with blending modes Multiply over Normal. I wanted a little more color depth and so added a copy of the ArtsyPaper on top of the photos with blending mode Darken. Added some transfers and glows to finish it off.
