Some tidbits about this building: It is 216 feet tall, one foot for each year since the found of Yale University, at the time of its being built. There is a spiral staircase of 284 steps. It is built of separate stone blocks, and was one of the tallest free-standing stone structure (the Washington Monument is taller). The stone at the base is darker, gradually lightening in color as it reaches the top spires. In 1966 it was retrofit with steel reinforcing. The lower area has stone statues of Yales Eight Worthies, such as Elihu Yale, and Eli Whitney & Noah Webster. The second level statues include learned greeks such as Homer and Aristotle. The third level are of allegorical figures depicting such things as Medicine, Business, Law, etc., and the top level depicts Yales students in the form of gargoyles. The sculptures are amazing I could gaze at them all day, they are so intricate, and hold so much meaning. There is a small chapel in the base with a large organ (which I was lucky enough to see), and the spiral staircase going up to the bell tower. Originally holding 20 huge bells, with the clappers alone weighing 500 pounds, and the largest bell weighing 7 tons, it now holds 54 bells. Up until 1949, a single person was in charge of ringing the bell, but in that year, the Guild of Yale Bellringers was formed. In present day, they even take song requests, for special occasions.
Journaling reads: Despite his quiet nature, he was thrown into the limelight on this special day in 1921. He held a trowel for a ceremonial photo op, with the Architect, builder, Yale President and other men of importance in the background. I happened across this photograph while doing online research on the various Yale buildings. I had heard the photo existed, but had never seen it. Harkness Tower had always been my favorite of Yale structures, but now more so, because of this found treasure. It is such a magnificent Gothic tower, and with its chiming throughout the day, always reminds me of my Grand-father Nichol.
