Nudie Cohn

Nudie Cohn was a colorful character, to say the least. I had never heard of him, but did a lot of the costume designs. Being that Lone Pine is located by the Alabama Hills, where 100s of westerns were filmed, it nice to learn more about this interesting designer. Personally, I don't think I would like to be sitting on all those silver dollars.

Journaling reads: On our trip to Mammoth Lakes in November 2012, we stopped at The Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine Film History. Right at the front entrance is a very flamboyant White Cadillac Convertible once owned by Nudie Cohn. Nudie was a costume designer for many Hollywood entertainers. He made Elviss gold lame suit, many of Tex, as well as many suits for Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. He also created the suit for Robert Redford in The Electric Horseman film. Other notable celebrities he created for were John Lennon, John Wayne, Gene Autry, Cher, Ronald Reagan, Elton John, and the musical groups America and Chicago.
Nudie Cohn was also famous for his garishly decorated cars. He customized about 18 vehicles, mostly Pontiac Bonneville convertibles. They were usually adored with silver dollar-studded dashboards and upholstery, and they often used pistols for door handles and gearshifts. They typically had extended rear bumpers and front grills adorned with huge longhorn steer horn hood ornaments. They, of course, were called Nudie Mobiles. About nine of these cars are still in existence. Not only had I never seen a car quite like this, but I had never heard of Nudie Cohn, and found it fun to learn about his very flamboyant life. He lived from 1902 until 1984. This Cadillac is on loan to the museum by his family.
