A keirin is a track cycling race. Fixed gear, no breaks. Riders go 7 at a time. They are clipped into the bike as well as strapped in therefore they all need holders to start them at the line. A motor bike goes in front of them, the gun goes off and they are all trying to position themselves first behind the motor bike to conserve energy. They do a few laps and he brings them up to speed, about 40 mph. The motor bike then pulls off and it is an all out sprint for two laps to cross finish line first. They do several heats in order to make it into the finals. It really is a very exciting race, alot of contact and dicey. That is probably why it is my sons fav.
