Southern Vittles

As seen in this month's edition of The Artisan Notebook

Journaling reads: My mom was born in Georgia, and brought up in North Carolina. When she married, she moved up to Connecticut. With her siblings living in North Carolina and Alabama, we would vacation most every summer by driving down south and visiting all our Aunts and Uncles. My dad was use to his Italian meals, so this was the only time we got to eat all the great southern foods like hush puppies, grits, corn bread and barbecue pork and that great sweet iced tea. It was something we looked forward to each year. We would seek out great little restaurants to visit during our drive. One year, my mom realized we missed the exit for our favorite Pit Cooked Bar B Q joint. She just couldnt miss the chance at having what she said was the best barbecue sandwich and coleslaw. As it turned out, we had to go about 90 minutes out of our way. When we finally arrived at the restaurant very hungry and road tired., we rushed to the door to find it locked, and then noticed a sign in the window saying ON VACATION. I could see the look of devastation on my moms face, and she knew us four kids couldnt wait too much longer before we ate, so it was off to the nearest MacDonalds - of all places. Despite our disappointment, we got our fill of southern cooking when we got down to Aunt Dots, as well as Pit BBQ at the 4th of July picnic in town along with our coleslaw, roasted corn on the cob, watermelon and our beloved sweet iced tea. We have grown to love our summer tradition of southern food - such a very special treat, and we laugh about the trek to find our favorite BBQ only to find it closed.

***thanks for looking***
what a great story, Joanie! i'd cry if i missed good BBQ! i love that you have the photo of the actual place.

Beautifully done ! Your story had me anticipating BBQ, then feeling your disappointment. Paper, stitches, photo and word art are perfect!

such a great memory and love the way you documented it. I grew up eating pork BBQ. When I moved to TX I ordered a BBQ sandwich thinking it would be port. Out came this beef thing---never had one until I moved to TX. Now I have to make my own pork BBQ.

That's a great memorie, Joanie! Oh my ... driving 90 minutes to find it closed :(
Love the texture of the BG-paper.

I have two restaurants that I have to eat at when I visit my sister in AZ. While there are good restaurants in NJ it just not the same. Love your journaling and the photo! fantastic page!
