Avalanche Search and Rescue

Journaling reads: Although I was no longer on ski patrol, Ron continued for about 10 years after Rachel was born. Even though the ski season was over, we decided to take Rons avalanche beeper out to the beach so Rachel and I could bury it for Ron to find. It was amazing how Ron was able to locate it in a very short time. It was good practice along with the training he got up at Mammoth Mountain on the different types of avalanches, their characteristics, how they formed and they even worked with dynamite showing how to start a controlled avalanche. Rachel thought it was great that her daddy could find the beacon so quickly.

Although the water was cold, Rachel enjoyed playing in the sand, and loved running along the edge of the surf, squealing when the water would get up close to her. It was nice too, that being too early in the season, there were few people on the beach - we had it all to ourselves. I loved seeing the delight on Rachels face as she ran and jumped on the wet sand. We spent some time making sand castles, but for the most part, she just wanted to run, so run she did.
