She Smiles

Journaling reads: It is hard to get a good photograph of Rachel. From about age 14 on, she has avoided the camera, and I usually get a grimace or a frown if she catches the camera in my hand. I cherish those few photos where she forgets all about the outside world, and just allows herself to enjoy the moment.

The trail course at the top of the ranch has all sorts of obstacles you might expect to find when out on the trail. We are lucky to have these obstacles to practice with, as we have learned that the average trail rider is ill prepared to what they should expect to find on the trail, and it is often those that come back with broken bones, after being thrown when the horse was frightened by a scary looking log, or a the branch of a tree swinging past him.

Rachel fully understand how scary it can be for a horse, she spends a lot of time working on introducing new things to Dust. While traveling through what we call the car wash, she nervously smiles, knowing full well, the average horse would freak and take off at a gallop to get away from the scary blue monsters floating through the wind, in his mind, trying to capture him. Duster, has had extensive training by this former owner, having been used herding cattle for a number of years. He has also been taken through the obstacles on the course hundreds of times, so although Rachel knows this, she still nervously smiles, and is a bit on guard just in case. Thinking more about being on guard with Duster, she forgets all about the camera in my hand, and I catch an excited smile on her face. Duster, on the other hand, walks through the obstacle with a whats the big deal attitude.

what interesting journaling, Joanie! i never would have thought of that sort of training for a horse. it seems SO smart to do it! you guys must really know your horses! i do love the smile on her face. she looks as relieved as the horse does to have gone through the "scary blue monsters " unscathed!

What a unique and precious page. I always love to read your stories. Pinned it too!

Btw...I forgot to say I love those blue brads and how you placed them. Fab!

Great journaling, love how you used the frame, horse stepping out of it. Beautiful!

Fantastic! I always love reading your journalling Joanie! Great photograph and design - inspired use of the Hummingbird ArtPlay, I love the bird in the tree! :)

fantastic journaling! I learn so much from your pages - I did not know that horses had to be trained to help them over come the unexpected on the trails - glad she smiled for you! awesome page!
