Journaling: Originally, I was going to crop this photo and write about Ben learning to ride a bike for the first time and about the many firsts he is sure to encounter in life. Then, I looked at the photo again. I saw Don running alongside Ben, ready to catch him should he fall. Something hes still ready to do even though this photo was taken over five years ago. I saw Olivia running after Ben, blazing her own path, trying to keep up, and cheering him on. While she may not cheer as loudly these days, she still, in her own way, roots for him and she definitely continues to see the world as a place to be conquered. I saw my shadow in the background, watching it all. I am still in the background much of the time, but my presence is an important one. I am a constant in all of their lives. So, while this photo certainly captures that moment when Ben first learned to ride, it also tells the story of us both then and now. No cropping required.
