when we visited Paris in 2006, there was a net covering Voltaire's statue outside the Louvre. we had no idea why. i assumed it was some sort of "performance art." i just learned that Voltaire's nose had fallen off shortly before we arrived, and the net was a "safety net," in case some other pieces of him flaked off. but i kind of liked believing that it was there because so many contemporaries of Voltaire thought he should have been "contained." sharp tongue, that one.
