La Jolla Children's Pool

Journaling reads: In 1931, Ellen Browning Scripps built a sea wall to protect an area of beach for children to be able to swim protected from the crashing waves. It was given to city with the promise that it would only be used as a public childrens pool. Over the years the shape of the area has changed and the small area has filled with sand, decreasing the area able to be used for public swimming. Nearby, at seal rock, seals congregate; however, starting in about 1996, seals began to come to the childrens pool. In 1997 the city had to close the pool, and legal battles began. Many want this area to become a marine mammal sanctuary, while others are stating that Ms. Scripps had given the land to be used only as a public swimming area. Barriers had been put up during pupping season, but today the fights still continue, with no end in sight for a resolution. I love being able to go down to see the seals, so I am torn as I understand the Ms. Scripps had wanted this land to be used for children to be able to safely swim, but I wonder if she were here if she would be okay with the seal having taken over the beach. If she were only here to tell us her thoughts.

***thanks for looking***
You are like a local historian, combining a beautiful photo and detailed journaling! Hope to see the ocean again when I'm out in August:)

What a great photo and journaling!! Amazing to see all those seals!!

Well, if I get to vote, I vote for the kids. Seals are taking over way too many places, and can camp out on islands that are inaccessible to people. Besides, they eat our salmon! But your page is gorgeous.

I've been to this beach. Aren't they fun to watch? Love the photo and the page!
