Typiste

I only knew my great aunt when she was over sixty and had never inquired about her working years although I knew she had worked in a bank. Then I found this photo of her taken in 1924 when her boss, the bank manager retired. She looks very proper which is to be expected of someone I always knew as very respectable and genteel. Her life had been sheltered by a loving and close family. Notice how she sits a little away from her boss. Being kept in her place or knowing her place? I have a million questions I wish I could ask her. It cant have been easy to work as a female in those days when typists were lampooned in magazines and newspapers.

A genteel slave quite prim and smart,
This maid will dress to suit the time
And look select, serene, sublime.

Forgot to add that I deliberately roughed up the photo with one of Anna's brushes for effect. The photo I had was perfect.
