The Flying Horses

Journaling reads: I grew up on these horses. That is, until Savin Rock closed down and most everything was hauled off to a landfill. Thankfully this carousel was sold to Six Flags in California. We had always called them the FLYING HORSES but they are now called the Grand Carousel. Although as a child, I never wanted to ride in the chariots (as seen in the original Savin Rock photo), they are no longer part of the current carousel. They were gorgeous with gold leaf, and very intricate. As a child I remember being mesmerized by the expressions on each horse - all seemingly different. It saddens me that Savin Rock is no longer in existence, but I am glad that the Flying Horses are still in use. This year is their 100th anniversary, built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1912, and known as PTC #21. Today there are only a few 100 in existence. My hope is that my flying horses are kept at Magic Mountain to be enjoyed for future generations, as everyone should experience a ride on a flying horse.

Oh, I love this - how magical, especially when you're little! We have a beautiful carousel in Spokane - the Loeff. I think it was built in 1909 - it still is in Riverfront Park and it has such beautiful horses and other animals. When we get back I'll take some pictures and post them, too! :0)

Oh this is so fascinating. Nothing catches the imagination of a child like a carousel. This one looks so grand !! Wonderful story and love how you scrapped the photos. Beautiful colouring and such a great font for the title. Love it all. Love it!
