I know I tend to put a lot of journaling on some of my pages, but at least for the heritage pages, I often find out so much about the history of the time and I am just so intrigued by it that I cant help but put it on the page. FYI the page title Something Special in the Air was an American Airline slogan. This is my MIL (sister to Jeanne that I have been scrapping lots of lately)/

Journaling reads: This photograph of Edith as a flight attendant for American Airlines is amazing. Such sparkle in her eyes. I know little about this photo. I know that she was a nurse, as she told me being a registered nurse was a requirement at the time. The early years of flight attendants requirements were to be nurses, petite, single, and usually between 20 and 26 years of age with mandatory retirement at age 32. Once a stewardess decided to wed she would be fired. When the United States entered WWII, all planes were acquired for wartime use, and nurses were needed in the military, so the nursing requirement was relaxed. With this information, I am placing Ediths time as a stewardess to be in the late 30s to early 40s prior to WWII. It was written of the stewardess in the late 1930s airlines put as much extraordinary care into selecting their stewardesses as they did their pilots, and then written in the early 1940s they exuded the skill of a Nightingale, the charm of a Powers model and the kitchen wisdom of a Fanny Farmer and ideal blend of traditional and modern femininity. The look on her face was that of a very proud and confident woman, and rightly so, as thousands of girls would apply for the small amount of jobs available. Her time flying was long before the luxury liners of today. The DC-6 and DC-7s that I believe she would have worked on were small and very noisy aircraft.

I think about her time as a stewardess and imagine the timeline of her life. I am guessing that she met her future husband while he was stationed in the military in the Los Angeles area. I am certain that Russell - her husband to be thought of his girl Edith as being an angel in the sky. Coincidentally, they were both originally from Chicago, but after the war they married and settled on Coronado, a sleepy military beach town. I am pretty certain they married after WWII was over, and soon after began their family, so her time as a stewardess probably ended with the war, but still it was remarkable to be one of the early women of the sky.
