My Childhood Home

Have you ever used google maps to see your old home?
journaling:
The other night I was chatting with Alexa about my childhood and I decided to look on google maps to see if there was a street view of my home, and sure enough, there was. I sat there for a second and blinked a couple of times. Did it always look this run down? Where was the beautiful front lawn I remembered covered with Buttercup flowers? Where were Moms Gladiolas? Did my memory really transform the reality? I looked again and realized that although this indeed was my childhood home, it is a bit different now. When we lived there the house was white (and the neighbors houses were blue & grey), the development was new and our house was brand new (I remember there were newspapers on the floor when we walked through the house for the first time to protect the flooring from shoes) and there was no ramp. I was nearly 4 years old when we moved into this house, it was right after our previous house burned down. We were staying with my grandmother for a little while and an organization found this house for us. My mom said the rent was $36 a month (a special rate for us because we lost everything in the fire)!
I have many many wonderful memories from this house. I remember rolling around in the grass, thinking buttercups were the most beautiful little flowers. I remember meeting my new neighbor, Misty, who immediately became my best friend. I remember playing marbles in the driveway (It was dirt then) and collecting beauties. I remember learning how to ride my sister's too big for me two wheeler bike and playing double dutch. I remember my Moms baking and her aprons. I remember backyard skating rinks and strap on skates with two blades. I remember snow piled so high you couldnt see our house at all. Oh yes I remember snow, lots and lots of snow. I remember walking to school with all the neighborhood kids (it was just up the street). I remember bedroom walls covered with pictures of teen idols Shaun Cassidy and Donny Osmond. I remember getting color t.v. and cable. I remember our black rotary phone and learning to memorize my phone number 855-2037. I remember birthday parties and tadpoles and pet cats, hamsters & birds. I remember my moms flower gardens and a swing set and laundry drying on a clothesline. And yes, I remember love. So much love.

Oh this is the most beautiful journaling! I guess it really is true that all Canadian kids get to have backyard ice rinks - that sounds so fun! childhood houses hold love! thanks for sharing about google maps to find old houses! - gorgeous page!

so sweet Heather... very interesting as just last week, Mom and I sat down with Google maps and did the very same thing... I had my little digi recorder and just let her talk and share the memories that came to her mind... going to do the same thing with the photos of homes I lived in so this was so sweet to see... your journaling indeed shows the love you had in your childhood... just very special...

Isn't google earth wonderful. I have screen shots of every home I lived in, except for two (for some reason google earth doesn't go down one street, and the other was not much more than a shack (college days), and it has been torn down). Love your journaling. Such wonderful memories. maybe extra special after losing everything in a fire (how horrible). Fabulous page Heather!

love google earth and can't wait for all my homes to be available on it. I would love to visit all the homes from my past and my parents and take photos and google may be the only way I will. Fabulous page and wonderful journalling.
