Journaling: Growing up, there was a pencil sharpener in our garage. It was mounted right outside the backdoor. I used that sharpener for more than twenty years. I loved the feel of the grinding wood, the tiny pencil shavings, and all the possibilities in those sharp little points. Over the years, I've had all kinds of pencil sharpeners, even a fancy electric number. That one rarely worked and, even when it did, the pencil point usually broke part way through the sharpening process. My mother eventually sold the house I grew up in. The pencil sharpener was forgotten and may still be mounted outside the backdoor. A few months ago, while exploring our new home, I was looking around the workshop in the garage. This is what I found mounted to one of the walls a pencil sharpener just like the one from my childhood. It was old and rusted and perfect. I quickly retrieved a pencil from the house and gave it a run through the grinder. Again, perfect! I think even my husband has grown to love this sharpener. I say this because of a package I found in the mail today. It held 144 beautiful, unsharpened no. 2 pencils. I asked my husband if I could have a few, then went to the garage and sharpened twelve. Each one brought a smile.
