Journaling (lft) We decided to take a day trip during our Ocean City trip to see the wild horses at Assateague National Park in MD. We were so excited to see these beautiful creatures. We drove about an hour from where we were staying. As we were driving through the park looking for a place to park and get a good view, I read that they recommended wearing bug repellant. Now the girls were little, and I didnt like to put chemicals on them, so I didnt really think anything of it. We found a place to park and got everyone out of the car. We walked about 10 feet - slapping at mosquitoes the entire time - they were really viscous. So bad in fact that all of us ran back to the car. We thought we were safe inside, but about 100 or so had flew in. We decided (after we killed those suckers) that wed enjoy those ponies from inside our car!
Journaling (Rt): During the 17th century free-roaming horses, cows, sheep and pigs caused expensive crop damage to local farms. Farmers were required to pay taxes on all mainland livestock and fence them in. Like People in the 21st century, these resourceful costal residents looked for ways to avoid paying this tax. They turned to nearby Assateague Island with its abundance of food, shelter and a natural corral made of water to solve their problem.
