My birthday is not really just my birthday. I was born on my mothers birthday, so I have shared one all my life. This sounds good, 'so cool' everyone says - but really that is not the case. Adults parties were always so much more fun - but I was always sent to bed early. Champagne seemed so much nicer than lemonade, the snacks were lobster rather than sandwiches and the dress was more sophisticated.
Nowadays - when it falls on a weekend we always visit my mother, and as she's old the whole affair is very quiet - just when I want the champagne and lobster!
One day I will have birthdays to myself - but I am certainly not looking forward to that day either. Maybe I should just allocate a different day, maybe a half year day - but that is my youngest child's birthday. Oh dear!
